I love to make stuff…its just in me. Luckily for me…I get to make things at my job. I get to take people in beautiful clothes, in beautiful places and capture moments in time. Then I get to go home, tweak the images how ever I want….and display them for who ever to see. When I’m not doing that…I love to just make other stuff: quilts, paintings, flowers for my hair, curtains….the list goes on and on. I get something out of it. I really do. It makes me feel good.
I realized just how important making stuff was to me when I was 19 and in a production company that traveled across the United States. I would have my back pack full of crayons, paper, magazines and stickers…I would write letters to friends and family (this was BEFORE email!…wow….that did make me feel a tad old!). I would cover these letters with stickers, collages and color them with crayons. I did have much money or a big scrap booking supply store to go to (this was pre-scrap booking craze too!)…but I did have my creative brain and my hands. So that is how I spent my time as we traveled from city to city…in a van with a bunch of people, creating.
As I get older, I have realized that I MUST have a creative outlet. It is non-negotiable. My husband understands that, and when I drag my kitchen chairs outside to paint them…he smiles and knows that its just what I do.
So on to Crazy Hat day….Lucky for my daughter, I had just the supplies we needed for a crazy hat….feathers, jewels, spray paint and some flowers….and a fabulous tool…the glue gun! Then my son decided he needed one too! I get to make stuff…and make my kiddos happy too. Its a good day.
My new obsession: Ring Shots! I am getting really into them lately! I love stealing the rings at weddings and challenging myself to find something new to shoot….to push my self to not do the same thing over and over. After all….weddings are my creative outlet and I get to use all those crazy ideas that are running around in my head! Brides: If you have an idea of a ring shot you would like me to shoot….send it my way! I love to try new shots!

Yay! I loved spending time in Bellingham! It reminds me of Downtown Seattle with a quaint twist! The Hotel Bellwether, as I mentioned before, was such a great place for a glorious wedding! I loved every second of shooting there. I also loved heading over to Western Washington University for a First Glance Session (watch for that soon!) ! So much fun! There are so many great brick buildings, lovely trees, fun fountain and some great sculptures! All those combined make for a great First Glance Session!
When thinking about your wedding venue…look around, think about wedding pictures you’ve seen and look for a variety of textures, building types, foliage and color. You don’t need a huge space of each…maybe a 9×9 ft. space. But variety is the key. If a wedding venue has some variety, you can be sure your photographer will be able to capture tons of great images for you on your big day!
A while ago, I got to help shoot a wedding at the Hotel Bellwether in Bellingham, WA and I just loved it! It has such a fun New England style look and has oodles of great places for Wedding Portraits! I loved the back deck and the view of the Marina. Anyone who has a love of water, like myself….this would be a perfect place to have your wedding! Another great aspect of this wedding venue is that it’s really close to Western Washington University and we were able to hop over there and shoot some more of our portraits! Stay tuned for more pics from this wedding in Bellingham!
One of my favorite parts of the Wedding Day is photographing the Wedding Party. I love to use what we have that day ( be it a gym wall, an airplane hanger, a bank of windows, a dock or whatever!). I love to assess the situation and use my little brain to discover great places to shoot groups. My style is pretty easy going and relaxed, so if you want very rigid, formal images, I might not be the right fit for you. Here we used a big gym wall and a bank of windows to get some great shots of the Wedding Party. Sometimes it just takes a little ingenuity and thinking outside the box to get some great images. So when I ask you to lean against a rusty wall, or a garage door, just trust me and go with it!
My favorite part of any wedding day is when the bride sees the groom for the first time. I just LOVE it! I love to see the brides face as she sneaks up on the groom….and the grooms face as he waits {and waits and waits!} in anticiptation! I love to see the grooms reaction as he turns and sees his new bride for the first time on the wedding day. {sigh!} I remember almost 8 years ago when I got married……I was so nervous and excited, as I walked down the aisle to see my man but as soon as he turned around…..all of my anxiety melted away, and I was just really excited to finally get married.I was so happy that I had a great photographer who was able to capture our faces as he turned around. To this day, its still hanging on my wall…..One of my favorites of my whole wedding day!
I seriously love the FunBooth! I love it so much that I have been GIVING it away left and right!:) Till Feb 15th:) I love looking through the images and seeing all the wedding guests having fun…making crazy faces and lovin on their family! A photobooth is such a great way to capture some of the people that might not be cuttin a rug on the dance floor or grabbing the bouquet. So if you’re on the fence, You gotta get one!
I am officially getting old. There. I said it. I just had a birthday last weekend, found my annual new wrinkle, and recently shot a wedding for a guy who I shot Senior Portraits for. See what I mean? I guess I’m just being dramatic because…I don’t feel old at all! I still know how to have a dance party with my kids, go sledding and stay up till 2 playing board games sometimes, so I can’t really be that old!
Ok..enough about me! Rocky and Cheryl, (see their engagment session in Snohomish here) got married last week end what it was such fun! They are so sweet and had some really cool wintery decorations (too be posted soon!).
Oh my! Cheryl’s wedding dress was so gorgeous!! And I loved that she decided to stay comfortable the whole day and wear slippers! What a smart gal!:)
One of my favorite things about shooting weddings lately is stealing the rings and shooting them!!! I give them back, of course….but its fun to try to find differing ways of shooting them. Sometimes its hard to come up with something that seems different, but sometimes the mundane coffee cup…like the picture above makes for an interesting shot. So if I ask to steal your rings during the reception…..I’m working on thinking up something interesting….and I WILL give them back!:)
If you are interested in having me capture your wedding day, email me at kaylee@eylanderphotography.com! Thanks so much for your interest!
Jammie and Susie were the best couple to end my 2009 Wedding with. They are a hilarious couple and they kept us laughing the whole time! I am so excited for them! I have to brag on their bubble choice a bit. They had THE best wedding bubbles I have ever photographed! Larger bubbles are the best send off for a daytime wedding. They photograph so beautifully!

I had so much fun so much fun with this stinkin cute family! I know Jenny from back in the day and she is an amazing gal! First of all, she found the cutest coordinating outfits for her fam….I’ve done it, and that is not an easy task! I just about lost my brain trying to do that! She also has a very modern, very cool cookie/cupcake business. If you want the cutest cookies or cupcakes….and don’t want to make them yourself….check out her blog and give her a shout. So, so cute! Oh, yeah…and it doesn’t stop there! She is a photographer too! Wow! I don’t know how she does it all!:)
I had such a great time hanging out at the Bridal Inspirations Expo in Bellingham, WA yesterday. I met some really great brides and some totally rad vendors! I also got to hang out with some 2 of my favorite wedding planners, Brittany from BBJean Events and Danielle from Added Details. I so wish I could have one of these detail oriented gals follow me around and keep my life in order! How do they do it!!???! I guess that’s why I bought a google phone!:) If you want a wedding day that you can just sit back and enjoy….call these girls! They are booking for 2010 right now, so hurry!!!
I also ate some of the best Wedding Cake I’ve ever tasted….Tirimisu!!! INCREDIBLE!!! Seriously, if you are looking for a Wedding Cake call Let Them Eat Cake!
My friendly neighbor (next to my booth) was the Kim Zylstra who owns The Backyard Gardener…..and oh my!:) If you want a modern and delightful florist…with amazing wire trees to rent…she is your girl! {She also told me that lives in a house that they built around a massive cedar tree….roots and all! How cool is that????} Her work is truely beautiful and she is super super nice!:)
I also found a new venue that I totally dig! Big barn, cool old truck, a field, and trees. You can’t get better than that!:) The Selene Homestead is amazing and I want a reason to shoot there! So if you have a wedding dress and you want head to Birch Bay with me…:) Let me know!
I also got to hang with the Jagger Photography Duo….:). Cali transplants that have ferrets and a totally unique photography style. So so fun!
Well…my first wedding expo was exhausting and wonderful. I fell asleep happily promptly at 9pm!
I just couldn’t wait any longer to share this fun video we did for Jammie & Susie’s wedding! They played it at the beginning of the wedding ceremony after the parents and grandparents were seated. It was a fresh new take on the slideshow. We had so much fun making it. The hardest part was for me to control my laughter from being heard on camera! We captured a ton of footage, so we used more of it for a Reception video.
I know I’m about 2 months late, but I wanted to thank all of you who voted for me for King 5’s Best in Western Washington! I won 5th out of all of the hundreds of Seattle Wedding Photographers and I thank all of you for taking the time to vote and write great things about my photography! WOW! When I’m having one of those days, I just go to the Winner’s Page and read all of the wonderful things ya’ll wrote about me and its an instant pick me up! Thanks so much for taking the time to vote! My business has grown so much because of winning this and I couldn’t have done it without you!
So once again, I know I talk about my cool church and rad pastor all the time, but once again, I must share with you just how cool they are! If you haven’t visited my church yet…now would be the time, while you can still snag a seat. This Saturday, Canyon Creek Church will host a UFC 107: Fight Night, where the UFC fights are shown live….
I have heard about this baby {cash} for a few years now. When I heard the name….I was stinking excited. Leila & myself were preggo at the same time…and hoping for a boys. Well….her Cash didn’t arrive that time, but this time, he’s here. Meet Cash.

Once again. My cool church is hosting a Fight Night. My pastor will be debuting http://www.fightpastor.com that night (which I know will be incredible as its been designed by some of the amazing graphic designers and web designers at from my church). If you don’t believe that UFC and church go together, then you need to check out our latest series…..The Ultimate Fighter, which is about the life of David.
I do have to say that this last week, My pastor shared a story about George Foreman…and actually explained his story in a way that I (as a woman!) was interested in!
